Frankfurt (Germany), 10 December (LaPresse) – The German government believes that the decision on any elections in Ukraine rests solely with the Ukrainian people. Berlin has ‘taken note’ of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's announcement that elections could be held within 60-90 days despite martial law, German government spokesman Steffen Meyer said, adding that ‘the necessary conditions, in particular the security situation, have also been emphasised’. “According to our understanding, it will now be up to the Ukrainian parliament to deal with the legal and political conditions,” Meyer added, reiterating that Germany's position is clear: Zelensky is the elected and legitimate head of state, and “all other steps must be decided independently in Ukraine”. When asked about possible German contributions to security guarantees in Kiev, Meyer said that ‘there will certainly be many opportunities to discuss this issue in the coming hours, days or weeks, if necessary.’
