Milan, Jan. 9 (LaPresse) – Following the official announcement of the release of several political prisoners in Venezuela, opposition leader María Corina Machado spoke about the deeply symbolic value for the families of the detainees, although she said it was insufficient given the scale of the human rights crisis in the country. In an audio message shared on her social media, the Nobel Peace Prize winner asked that this day be considered an “act of moral restitution.” “Accept this moment as an act of moral restitution, as confirmation that your strength of spirit has not been in vain,” she said, referring to the prisoners who will be released. While welcoming the measure, Machado noted that the releases do not compensate for the harm suffered by the detainees. “Nothing can bring back the years stolen,” she said. However, she stressed that “this day is important because it recognizes what has always been known: that injustice will not last forever and that the truth, though deeply wounded, will ultimately prevail.”
