Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 11 January (LaPresse) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in an interview on state television that the authorities will listen to the protesters, but that the rioters are trying to ‘destroy the entire society’. The reference is to the protests spreading across the Islamic Republic. This is a hardening of tone by the president, who has so far failed to appease public opinion. ‘People have concerns, we should sit down with them and, if it is our duty, we should resolve their concerns,’ Pezeshkian said. ‘But the most important duty is not to allow a group of rioters to come and destroy the whole society,’ he added. The interview was broadcast on state television today. Initially, it had been suggested that it would be broadcast on Saturday, but in the end it was not aired. The protests began on 28 December.
