Frankfurt (Germany), 12 January (LaPresse) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the violence perpetrated by Iranian security forces against peaceful protesters, calling it ‘disproportionate’ and “brutal”. ‘I call on the Iranian leadership to protect its people instead of threatening them,’ Merz said during his visit to India. ‘We condemn in the strongest terms the violence that the leadership in Tehran is using against its own people.’ He added that this is a sign of weakness, not strength. ‘And this violence must end.’ Merz explicitly praised the courage of the demonstrators, emphasising that they were peacefully demonstrating for freedom in their country, which is their right.
