This is what the Spanish newspaper El País writes after all existing documents found by the government in various ministries relating to the attempted coup d'état of 23 February 1981, led by Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero, who died yesterday at the age of 93, were declassified and published yesterday in Spain. The Spanish newspaper emphasises how the king's actions annoyed the subversive military, who considered him a “target to be taken down”. After the declassification of the documents, “the official version of King Juan Carlos's role during the attempted coup remains unchanged”, the newspaper points out.
