Madrid (Spain), 26 February. (LaPresse) – ‘We will enshrine the right to abortion in the Constitution.’ This was stated by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez as he launched the election campaign for the regional elections in Castile and Leon in Burgos. The socialist leader celebrated the fact that the Council of State today issued a favourable opinion on the reform presented by the executive to introduce the right to terminate a pregnancy into the Constitution. The right to abortion ‘is provided for by law, but it is a law that is not respected. Abortion is a service that must be provided by the national health system, but in Castile and León, as in many other regions governed by the Popular Party, only 15% of abortions are performed in public hospitals, with the rest being transferred to private clinics,’ said the Prime Minister. ‘That is why it is important to guarantee this right, because it is not fair that, depending on the political colour of the government in power in the region, women's rights are respected or not,’ ‘women's rights must be respected, yes or yes,’ ‘that is why we want to protect the right to abortion in the Constitution,’ she stressed.
