Brussels, 17 March (LaPresse) – "We are deeply concerned about the situation in Lebanon. The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is dire, with over 900,000 people displaced, amounting to around 20% of the Lebanese population. Any further ground offensive would exacerbate the situation; civilians are paying the highest price in terms of casualties, which already stand at around 900 people, including over 100 children. We condemn Hezbollah’s refusal to lay down its arms and the continuation of indiscriminate attacks against Israel, which are dragging Lebanon into a spiral of violence in a war that neither Lebanon nor the Lebanese people have chosen.” This was stated by the European Commission’s spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, Anouar El Anouni, during the daily press briefing. “Attacks against civilians, civilian infrastructure, healthcare personnel and facilities, as well as universities, are unjustified, unacceptable and must cease immediately,” he continued. “We welcome the Lebanese authorities’ call for direct negotiations with Israel, and it is essential that Lebanon and Israel return to the negotiating table and agree to an immediate ceasefire. As the EU, we reiterate our call for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and support the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah and put an end to its military activities.”
