Milan, 21 March (LaPresse/AP) – The UK has reassured Cyprus that the British airbase on the island will not be used for US strikes against Iran. The UK is allowing the US to use bases in England and on the island of Diego Garcia to target Iran’s missile programme. However, the British government states that Prime Minister Keir Starmer informed Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides today that the RAF base at Akrotiri “will not be involved in the continuation of the agreement between the UK and the US regarding the use of British bases for the collective defence of the region”. At the start of the conflict, Akrotiri was struck by an Iranian-made drone, which caused damage but no injuries. Iran also fired missiles at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, but failed to hit the base.
