Rome, 29 March (LaPresse) – “I have just telephoned the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, to express my deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident that took place this morning in the Old City of Jerusalem, in which Cardinal Pizzaballa and the Custos of the Holy Land, Monsignor Francesco Ielpo, were prevented from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for prayer, due to the ongoing security situation". Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrote this on X. “I made it clear that the incident stemmed from security concerns, due to the ongoing threat of missile attacks by the Iranian terrorist regime against the civilian population in Israel, following previous incidents in which Iranian missiles fell in the area of the Old City of Jerusalem in recent days,” he added. ‘I reiterated the State of Israel’s unwavering commitment to freedom of religion for all faiths and to safeguarding the status quo at the holy sites in Jerusalem,’ Herzog concluded.
