Tehran (Iran), 8 April (LaPresse) – US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week suspension of attacks against Iran, accepting Pakistan’s proposal and making the truce conditional on the immediate and secure opening of the Strait of Hormuz. The US President described the halt as a ‘two-sided’ ceasefire, arguing that US military objectives had been achieved but that a lasting peace agreement remained a long way off. Tehran has also accepted Islamabad’s proposal, driven by diplomatic pressure from China: it has further guaranteed passage through the Strait of Hormuz under the coordination of its own armed forces. The markets responded very positively, with oil prices plummeting. The agreement provides for a period to finalise a possible deal based on a ten-point proposal put forward by Tehran: a first round of negotiations between the US and Iran is expected on Friday in Islamabad. The truce has also been backed by Israel, with Prime Minister Netanyahu making it clear: “Lebanon is excluded”.
