Milan, 6 May (LaPresse) – "Spain is not looking the other way. Sanctioning those who defend international justice means putting the entire human rights system at risk. The EU cannot stand by and watch this persecution unfold. For this reason, today we are calling on the Commission to activate the Blocking Statute, to protect the independence of the International Criminal Court and the United Nations, as well as their actions aimed at ending the genocide in Gaza." This is what Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote in a post on social media platform X. The EU Blocking Statute is a legal mechanism designed to protect European citizens from the effects of sanctions imposed by third countries. The United States imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court after it issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, accusing them of war crimes committed during the campaign against Hamas following the attack on 7 October 2023.
