Dubai (United Arab Emirates), 8 May (LaPresse/AP) – Following the latest attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump has given assurances that the ceasefire is holding despite the violence, and warned: “They made fools of us today. We wiped them out.” “They need to understand: if the deal isn’t signed, they will suffer greatly,” he added after the exchange of fire, threatening further attacks. When asked how close the US is to a deal with Iran, Trump replied: “It could happen any day now,” but immediately added: “And it might not happen at all.” Yesterday evening, US Central Command stated that it had carried out “defensive strikes” against “unprovoked Iranian attacks” in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military stated that no ships had been hit. It declared that it was not seeking an escalation, but was “remaining positioned and ready to protect US forces”. The US military said it had intercepted Iranian attacks against three US Navy ships as they passed through the Strait of Hormuz and had ‘targeted Iranian military installations responsible for the attacks on US forces’. The exchange of messages highlights the fragility of the ceasefire, in place for a month, between the two countries.
