Rome, 16 May (LaPresse) – Israel and the United States are making their most intensive preparations since last month’s ceasefire for a possible resumption of attacks against Iran, with the aim of being ready as early as next week. This is according to The New York Times, citing two Middle Eastern officials, in an article also reported in the Israeli media. One of the options on the table involves sending commandos on the ground to recover nuclear material buried under the rubble. Military officials explain, however, that such a complex operation would carry the risk of numerous casualties, as it would require thousands of support troops to establish a security perimeter around the operational area and would likely lead to a clash with Iranian ground forces. Troops could also be deployed to capture the island of Kharg, a key hub for Iranian oil exports in the Persian Gulf. Another option would involve more intensive bombing of Iranian military sites and infrastructure.
