Milan, 22 May (LaPresse) – According to the New York Times, Iran has begun talks with Oman regarding the imposition of tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Two sources familiar with the talks emphasise that the discussions concern tariffs – that is, the fees charged for services provided to transiting ships – rather than whether or not to impose tolls, which apply to the transit itself. Oman, an ally of the United States, had initially rejected the idea of cooperating with Iran in the strait, but has more recently realised that the project could benefit Muscat and has expressed a willingness to promote the plan with neighbouring Gulf countries and the United States, the NYT reports, citing two Iranian officials.
