Geneva (Switzerland), 14 June (LaPresse/AP) – Thousands of demonstrators have gathered to voice their discontent with the G7, the group of wealthy nations, as US President Donald Trump and his counterparts prepare to hold a summit starting tomorrow in neighbouring France. Environmentalists and feminists joined anti-imperialists, defenders of independent media and supporters of Palestinian rights in a lakeside park in Geneva for a march through the city. A boat with ‘No G7’ written on its sail passed by. Among the crowd was a group of about 15 young people in black hooded sweatshirts with their faces covered, who gathered behind an anti-Trump banner. Signs reading “Never anti-Semitic; always anti-Zionist” could also be seen. The protest organisers had printed a handbook for demonstrators that included a map of the security perimeter, advice on how to prepare for the march and guidance on what to do in the event of being detained by the police. According to the police, at least 20,000 people took part in the demonstration. The first reports of damage came in around 4.30 pm. A car was set alight and clashes broke out between demonstrators and police near Cornavin railway station. The window of a bank branch was also smashed. Several masked demonstrators were seen smashing windows to gain entry to a building on Avenue Giuseppe-Motta, near the Palais des Nations. This is the headquarters of PricewaterhouseCoopers, a firm specialising in auditing and accounting services. In the Grand-Pré area, police used tear gas in response to objects being thrown at officers. This was reported by RTS.
