Milan, 1 May (LaPresse) – ‘We are still plagued by the tragedy of those who lose their lives at work. We cannot stop as long as there are mothers like those who have come here today to speak of their son’s murder; we cannot stop, and it is murder.’ This was stated by the General Secretary of the UIL, Pierpaolo Bombardieri, from the stage of the May Day rally organised by the CGIL, CISL and UIL in Marghera on the theme of ‘Decent Work’ for Labour Day. “We must remember this when we see that employers tamper with safety devices to prevent machines from stopping: these are murders and must be treated as such. Introduce the offence of manslaughter at work, set up a special prosecutor’s office; the sentences are a disgrace, they are an insult to the memory of these young people who have lost their lives,” emphasised Bombardieri. “Let us increase prevention, inspections and our safety culture; every worker has the right to return home safe and sound, and this is a non-negotiable principle,” he reiterated.
