Milan, 4 June (LaPresse) – ‘No evidence of disciplinary offences on the part of the magistrates has come to light.’ This is the conclusion set out in writing by the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, following the investigation into the family in the woods, which he himself had ordered. In a statement, the Minister therefore ordered the investigation to be closed; the investigation had aimed to clarify whether the judges’ decision to separate parents and children had been carefully considered. ‘Should any matters of disciplinary significance emerge, I would exercise the powers conferred upon me by law,’ Nordio had said on 26 November during Question Time in the Chamber of Deputies. Today, he has backtracked. ‘Decisions on the merits, in accordance with the independence and autonomy of the judiciary, are not subject to assessment,’ Nordio’s statement clarifies.
