Rome, 30 April (LaPresse) – "When a request for a pardon arrives at the Quirinale accompanied by a favourable opinion from the competent judicial authorities, the President of the Republic usually grants the pardon. In this case, the application was accompanied by an opinion from the judicial authority that was broadly and decisively favourable.” This is according to sources at the Quirinale, when asked about the latest developments in the Minetti case. “Subsequently,” the same source continues, “the press has put forward accounts of the facts that differ significantly from those underlying the application for a pardon and the opinion accompanying it. The President therefore deemed it necessary to request – in agreement with the Ministry of Justice – that the judicial authorities ascertain the validity of these accounts. It is now only right,” the source concludes, “that we await with respect the prompt completion of these checks by the judiciary.”
