Milan, 7 May (LaPresse/AP) – Niklas Süle, a Champions League winner and five-time Bundesliga champion, has announced his retirement at just 30 after an injury led him to reconsider his future. The Borussia Dortmund defender will leave football at the end of the season, when his contract was already due to expire. “I am very, very clear about my decision,” Süle told the Spielmacher podcast in an episode published on Thursday. “Despite that, football has given me so much and I have experienced such beautiful and fantastic moments that I am very sorry to say this,” he added. Süle has missed 22 matches this season due to various injuries and said a moment of clarity came after the knee injury he sustained in the match against Hoffenheim last month. Süle said the fear of another serious injury prompted him to consider the impact on himself and his family.
