Washington, Sept. 4 (LaPresse) – The Trump administration has taken the tariff dispute to the Supreme Court, asking the justices to quickly rule on the president’s power to impose broad import taxes under federal law. The government has asked the Court to overturn the Appeals Court ruling that deemed most of the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump under an emergency powers law illegal. This is the latest in a series of appeals filed by the Trump administration to the Supreme Court. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has kept the tariffs in place for now, but the administration has nonetheless requested the Supreme Court to intervene swiftly, with a petition filed Wednesday evening and reviewed by the Associated Press. Attorney General D. John Sauer urged the justices to take up the case and hear arguments in early November. "This decision casts a shadow of uncertainty over international negotiations that the President has pursued over the past five months through the imposition of tariffs, jeopardizing both already negotiated framework agreements and ongoing negotiations,” he wrote. “The stakes in this case could not be higher.”
