Milan, 6 May (LaPresse/AP) – Yesterday’s elections in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan have reinforced a picture that is becoming increasingly clear: whilst US President Donald Trump continues to dominate the Republican Party, the Democrats appear to have the wind in their sails ahead of November’s mid-term elections. The greatest demonstration of Trump’s power came in Indiana, where he backed the challengers of seven Republican state senators in the primaries who had rejected his redistricting plan in December. Five of the president’s candidates won thanks to the astronomical sums spent on their campaigns. Meanwhile, in Michigan, a Democrat won the state Senate race by a large majority in a bellwether district, the latest in a series of victories in special elections. In Ohio, the Democrats are pinning their hopes on former Senator Sherrod Brown, who easily secured the Democratic nomination and will face Republican Senator Jon Husted, who was appointed last year to fill the vacancy created when JD Vance became vice-president.
