Brussels, May 7 (LaPresse) – “Yesterday evening we dedicated almost six hours to an important trilogue on the tariff regulation implementing the EU-US Joint Declaration between the European Union and the United States. This significant investment of time and effort shows that we are making considerable progress and that we have already achieved a lot — although, of course, nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.” This was stated in a LinkedIn post by EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič after yesterday’s negotiation round between European institutions aimed at reaching a common agreement on the EU-US tariff deal. “I also remain in close contact with my US counterparts on the next steps of our legislative process, and at the same time I urge the US administration to respect its commitments,” he added. “My goal,” Šefčovič underlined, “remains threefold: first, to demonstrate that the EU is moving from words to action and honouring its commitments; second, to achieve an outcome that fully respects the EU-US Joint Declaration; third, to safeguard the interests of EU stakeholders, including by equipping the Commission with the necessary tools to ensure that the Joint Declaration is faithfully implemented by both sides.” The Commissioner also stressed that “further stabilisation of EU-US trade, strengthening predictability for European companies, including many SMEs, and safeguarding jobs that depend on unprecedented transatlantic trade, is in everyone’s interest.” The “intense” work between the Commission and co-legislators, he said, continues in order to quickly reach a positive outcome.
