Rome, 16 May (LaPresse) – Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to comments made to the media by US President Donald Trump following his summit with Xi Jinping, stating that the island is a “sovereign country”. ‘Our position is clear: Taiwan will continue to contribute to regional peace and stability. We are determined to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. This has always been President Lai Ching-te’s position and the firm commitment of the 23 million inhabitants,’ "it is evident that Taiwan is a sovereign democratic country. Beijing has no right to claim jurisdiction over Taiwan. The government will continue to deepen cooperation with the United States, maintain peace through strength, and ensure that the security and stability of the Taiwan Strait are not threatened or compromised. This serves the common interests of Taiwan, the United States and democracies around the world,” reads a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
