Rome, 12 May (LaPresse) – Four years after the Unabomber case was reopened – a series of over 30 bomb attacks in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto between 1993 and 2006, for which no culprit had been identified – the judge for preliminary investigations at the Court of Trieste has closed the case, bringing the investigation to an end. ‘He was expecting it. It was a prediction I had already made and I had no doubts about this outcome because the situation was very clear in terms of the evidence,’ lawyer Maurizio Paniz, defence counsel for Elvo Zornitta – an engineer from Azzano Decimo who for years was the main suspect in the attacks – told LaPresse. The case against him was brought by a police officer specialising in ballistics from the forensic laboratory, who was later accused of tampering with crucial evidence. ‘Twenty years of suffering caused by the unjustified and unjustifiable behaviour of a police inspector who betrayed his mandate and also caused inescapable consequences for Mr Zornitta’s family,’ emphasised Paniz. "This supplementary investigation was carried out to verify whether, in the light of new DNA testing techniques, anything would emerge. The result was entirely negative for Mr Zornitta because absolutely nothing was found, as we knew would be the case. The objection raised by one of the injured parties demonstrated a lack of full understanding of the court records, as the answers to the questions were already in the file,” concludes the lawyer.
