Rome, June 1 (LaPresse) – “For the four municipal police officers involved in the firecracker explosion that spooked the horses, the first step was to exclude them from the parade. Then I spoke with Dr. Scafati, commander of the Traffic Intervention Group, so that the four individuals would be removed from operational duties, also to protect their own safety, as they could be subjected to insults,” said the commander of Rome’s local police, Mario De Sclavis, during a press briefing on what happened during the rehearsals for the June 2 parade.
“The explosion of fireworks that caused the horses to panic and flee along Via Cristoforo Colombo between Friday and Saturday was a foolish act, repeated for years but never by members of the corps, and nothing had ever happened. Unfortunately, this time there were consequences. This does not exempt those responsible from accountability. They are to blame for the consequences of those fireworks,” De Sclavis added.
“They did it with all the naivety in the world, but that does not mean they will not pay for what they did. This custom has been going on for years, with some platoons setting off fireworks during rehearsals. The fireworks were not stolen from any seizure; they were freely purchased and lasted only a few seconds. They are all young people who live together for a month, carry out rehearsals, and on the evening after the end of rehearsals they celebrate this period with a social gathering. For some years now, fireworks have been added, it is an unhealthy habit.”
