Rome, June 8 (LaPresse) – Gabriele Bianchi has also been sentenced to life in prison in the third appeal trial for the murder of Willy Monteiro Duarte, the 21-year-old man killed during a beating in Colleferro, in the province of Rome, on the night of September 5–6, 2020. The Second Court of Assizes of Appeal in Rome upheld the requests of Prosecutor Francesco Brando and Attorney General Carlo Lasperanza, sentencing the defendant to life in prison. The other sentences have long been final: life imprisonment for his brother Marco Bianchi, 23 years for Francesco Belleggia, and 21 years for Mario Pincarelli. The new trial had been ordered by the Court of Cassation following the referral last November, limited to the assessment of the general mitigating circumstances recognized for Gabriele Bianchi in the previous second appeal. In that proceeding, Marco Bianchi had been sentenced to life imprisonment, while Gabriele’s sentence had been set at 28 years. The Court of Assizes in Frosinone had sentenced the Bianchi brothers to life imprisonment. Subsequently, in the first appeal trial, the judges had granted general mitigating circumstances, reducing the sentence to 24 years for both brothers. The Court of Cassation had confirmed the defendants’ criminal liability for voluntary manslaughter, making the convictions for Belleggia and Pincarelli final and ordering a new appeal exclusively for the Bianchi brothers. The grounds for the ruling will be filed within 15 days. Gabriele Bianchi’s lawyers have already announced they will appeal to the Court of Cassation.
