Rome, 12 June (LaPresse) – ‘Dear President Meloni, I never imagined that, amidst falling purchasing power, Italy lagging behind in growth, petrol stations as expensive as jewellers, corruption investigations and 13 billion euros tied up in the bridge project, you would find the time to follow my social media and keep up to date with my posts.’ This is how M5S leader Giuseppe Conte responded to the post in which Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on one of his videos this morning. ‘It surprises me, however,’ he adds, "that her only concern was to point out that her face appears in my video, when in reality she had left the chamber and could not have followed my speech live—which I delivered after her statements, when she was required to listen not only to the majority’s speeches but also to those of the opposition. True. That video montage served to ‘contextualise’ my speech, to make it clear that those questions and requests for clarification were directed at her. These are questions and requests put forward by millions of citizens, families and businesses who are in difficulty and would like answers from her. Answers, however, even today, after almost four years in government, are not forthcoming. And they haven’t arrived because you don’t know what to say; you have no plans, no solutions. And so you spend your time on my social media accounts looking for distractions and diversions to make yourself look like a victim. Anything goes, as long as you don’t have to address the priorities and urgent needs of the public. In short, anything goes to turn it into a ‘row’. You complain that you weren’t in the Chamber whilst I was speaking. True. Nor was she present when we were working, alongside thousands upon thousands of responsible people, to save the country from the pandemic. In fact, she went on TV to call me a ‘criminal’. She wasn’t even present when I secured the 209 billion euros for the NRRP; in fact, she was obstructing us. Yet now I see her smiling face everywhere, toasting the investments made with that money. These are the only construction sites open in Italy today, saving us from the recession to which your government would have condemned us – a government that is distinguishing itself through its manifest incompetence. If you are so keen on watching my videos, when might we have a serious debate on the urgent issues that I raise, and that Italians raise alongside me, for your attention?
