Frankfurt (Germany), 27 April (LaPresse) – Chancellor Friedrich Merz has suggested that Ukraine’s path to peace and the European Union could involve territorial concessions, and that both issues could ultimately be decided by parallel referendums. Merz warned that a peace agreement could mean that “part of Ukrainian territory might no longer be Ukrainian”, during a visit to the Carolus-Magnus High School in Marsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, as reported by Ntv. On Ukraine’s accession to the EU, the Chancellor emphasised that the process still requires time: “Zelensky had the idea of joining the EU on 1 January 2027. That won’t work. Even 1 January 2028 is not realistic.” “We cannot admit a country at war into the European Union. The war must end. Secondly, Ukraine must meet all the conditions, for example, the rule of law. The issue of corruption has also improved, but it is still not enough,” she added.
