Rome, 6 May (LaPresse) – The Beersheba District Court in Israel has rejected the request for the release of the two Global Sumud Flotilla activists, Saif Abukeshek and Thiago Avila, upholding the previous decision to extend their detention until Sunday. This is reported by The Times of Israel. The Israeli human rights organisation Adalah, which represents the interests of the two activists, states that the court’s decision is “illegitimate and unreasonable”. According to Adalah, the ruling “failed to address the fundamental lack of legal authority on the part of the state to carry out an arrest – which in effect amounted to a kidnapping – in international waters”. Saif AbuKeshek is a Palestinian holding Spanish citizenship, whilst Thiago Avila is a Brazilian citizen.
