Milan, 9 May (LaPresse) – Florian Philippot, leader of the sovereigntist party Les Patriotes and former deputy leader of the National Front (FN), has announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election in France. “I am standing in the presidential election,” the former MEP, who advocates France’s withdrawal from the European Union and NATO, told France Info, explaining that “we cannot resign ourselves to a contest between Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Jordan Bardella or between Édouard Philippe and Jordan Bardella”. He added, however, that he might withdraw from the race for the Élysée Palace in the event of a “more unifying candidacy” within the sovereigntist camp, such as that of Philippe de Villiers. “Today, the entire sovereigntist movement believes that de Villiers can embody this anti-EU and anti-NATO wave,” explained Philippot, whose list had secured less than 1% of the vote in the last European elections.
