Madrid (Spain), 12 May (LaPresse) – ‘The WHO’s assessment is that the global health risk remains low.’ This was stated by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking about the Hantavirus outbreak on board the cruise ship MV Hondius, during a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at Moncloa. ‘There is nothing to suggest that there will be a major outbreak,’ Ghebreyesus continued, whilst warning, however, that ‘the situation may change’. ‘Given that this is a virus with a long incubation period, it is possible that new cases will be reported in the coming weeks,’ he added. At present, he added, there are 11 reported cases of Hantavirus, including three deaths. Of these, nine have been confirmed as the infected individuals tested ‘positive’.
