Madrid (Spain), 19 May (LaPresse) – Former Spanish Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has broken his silence after the National Court reported that he is under investigation for influence-peddling and other offences in connection with the bailout of the airline Plus Ultra. In a video sent to the media, Zapatero denied any wrongdoing and said he was ready to defend himself ‘with firmness and conviction’. "This morning I received a notification from the National Court summoning me as a person under investigation. I wish first of all to express my willingness to cooperate with the judicial authorities. At the same time, I wish to reiterate that all my activities, both public and private, have always been conducted in full compliance with the law. My private activities, income and remuneration have been declared via income tax returns with absolute transparency and legality. Furthermore, I wish to firmly reiterate that I have never undertaken any dealings with any public administration or public sector in relation to the rescue of Plus Ultra. I would also like to reiterate that I have never owned, either directly or through third parties, any company, either in Spain or abroad, nor have I participated in any operation of this kind‘, ’I will exercise my right to a defence with total firmness and conviction, and I will be available to the media in the coming days", said Zapatero.
